There is currently no global definition of cannabis-based medicinal products. For informational purposes, we refer to the UK government’s products classed as cannabis-based for medicinal use. To constitute a cannabis-based product for medicinal use in humans, a product must satisfy three requirements:
- it needs to be a preparation or product which is or contains cannabis, cannabis resin, cannabinol, or a cannabinol derivative
- is produced for medicinal use in humans
- is a medicinal product, or a substance or preparation for use as an ingredient of, or in the production of an ingredient of, a medicinal product.
A CBMP can be further categorized in the following ways:
-
- Pharmaceutical, herbal, or health products are cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) prescribed by a healthcare professional with a marketing authorization and with health claims.
- Medical products are cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) prescribed by a healthcare professional currently without a marketing authorization (early and managed access programs or compassionate use, personalized, pharmacy exemption).
- Health products are health products containing cannabis or for use with cannabis: see guidance for the Cannabis Act, the Food and Drugs Act, and related regulations.
